Bridgewater Canal rescue plan confirmed

Bridgewater Canal owners Peel has confirmed today (Saturday) that the breach caused by flooding on New Year’s Day will be dammed past all stranded boats, and refilling will start on January 20.

It is estimated it will take two weeks to refill the canal.

Confirming the update Lymm Councillor Graham Gowland commented: “It’s a relief for all those affected to know the timescale for refloating. The boaters are a resilient bunch, but life at an angle hasn’t made life easy, let alone not being able to access services such as water ant pump-outs.”

Fellow Parish councillor Jenna Brown added: “The way the community and different agencies have pulled together has been amazing. Councillors from Lymm and Little Bollington Parish have worked together, and the council has pulled together everyone from Peel to United Utilities, to provide as much support as they can to those affected.
“We shouldn’t forget how the community themself worked together fix as much as they could, and with the support from local businesses it’s been a heart-warming response to an awful situation.”

The canal burst its banks near Little Bollington on New Year’s Day after flooding caused by heavy rain.

Further updates can be found on the Bridgewater Canal website.
