ONGOING issues at Penketh Parish Council including allegations of “ingrained and systematic bullying, coupled with the incitement of hate” has resulted in the resignation of Cllr Craig Lenihan.

Cllr Lenihan claimed that during the election he was subjected to bullying ands harassment. He also claimed emails had been hidden regarding Penketh Parish Council being under investigation from their auditors.

Cllr Lenihan tendered his resignation after last Monday’s meeting and put a statement on social media following “serious conversations” saying:”The outcome though was that I would be a single opposition to all that is wrong within the council. It is an untenable position and as such I reluctantly tendered my resignation.
“I have truly loved serving every single person within Penketh. I had case work everyday and thrived from it. I have had to make a decision, arguably selfish, to look after my own health. But it will leave a massive void in my life.”
His full statement can be read here.
The council has been involved in numerous issues in recent years, resulting in variious resignations of clerks and Cllrs.
In January last year residents were urged to share their views following the launch of a community governance review calling for the abolition of Penketh Parish Council.
In March 2021 there were ongoing issues between independent and Labour Cllrs.

In response a Spokesperson of Penketh Parish Council said:”The Council is undergoing a period of transition with a new administration following the local elections on May 2. During the FY22/23 audit, several historic issues were identified that require our attention. We are pleased to report that the auditor found no instances of fraud or corruption. The Council is committed to addressing the identified matters, which primarily involve updates to policies and procedures.

“Our members and officers have consistently strived to ensure the best outcomes for the community amidst challenging circumstances. We are eager to move forward and are confident in our ability to continue delivering positive results for the residents of Penketh.
“Currently, we are focusing on significant improvements, such as enhancing the drainage at Greystone Recreational Ground and installing new play equipment. Residents can look forward to enjoying these upgraded facilities in the coming weeks.
“We welcome and encourage community input and invite residents to attend our future meetings, all of which are open to the public, to share their recommendations for further improvements.
The Council remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant and supportive community and appreciates the public’s trust and engagement during this continued period of evolution.”
