Film shows mental health professionals are neglecting their own health

A MENTAL health professional from Warrington has made a short film to flag up the fact that mental health workers are neglecting their own mental health.

Justin Walker, from Burtonwood, works within the NHS for the Wigan and Leigh home treatment team.

He made his film, “Only Human” to show that mental health professionals are themselves not immune to mental illness.
The film has been widely viewed on social media and UClan – the University of Central Lancashire – is using it for teaching sessions on self-care and self-awareness.
Justin said: “Obviously, it is common knowledge the pressure and stress NHS services are under at present.
“There have been some recent events within our team’s local area that made me reflect on our service and mental health professionals in general.
“I realised that mental health professionals have, in reality, been neglecting their own mental health struggles for some time. There appears to be a stigma in relation to mental health professionals and mental illness.
“There is almost a belief that “us professionals” are immune to mental illness and that we are robots devoid of any emotion.
“This is completely untrue. We are Human.”
The film raises awareness of the issue of mental health professionals’ own health and well-being.

Justin says the response to the film has been overwhelming – and thanks colleagues who have given support and shared it on social media.
He said: “I hope the film is relatable and resonates with all NHS staff, not just those in mental health services.”

It is the second film Justin has made, using purely his iPhone and editing skills.
The previous film featured his daughter as a Western Cowgirl.

Father and daughter set to hit big screen after producing short Western film on smartphone for £60 !
