THE annual Bawming the Thorn tradition is back after a break due to the pandemic.

This year it is being held on June 18 when the roads around the village will be closed from 11.50am until 1pm.

The procession, which begins at Appleton Thorn Village Hall, leaves at 12 noon and parades around the village, led by the Cadishead Public Band and arrives at the tree for the ceremony at 12.30pm.

Interim ‘entertainment’ at the tree will be carried out by Mark Olly.

The year six children of Appleton Thorn Primary School will dance around the tree singing to the Bawming song. Bawm meaning decorate, where the tree is decorated with bows and ribbons.

The original tree is reputed to be planted by Adam-de-Dutton, a knight returning from the crusades and planting a cutting from the Glastonbury thorn.

After the ceremony the procession will make its way back to the field at the village hall where there will be stalls, performances and attractions for all ages. Admittance is £1 per person with children under 13 free.

The MC for the event will be Steve Lewis from Radio Warrington. The commitee would like to thank previous MC, Jim Jefferies for being MC for the last 12 years.

St Cross Church will be hosting a Jubilee Festival with Flowers on Bawming weekend 17th-19th at 11am to 3pm and 1pm to 4pm on Bawming Day.

The village hall bar opens to the public at 1pm, at approximately 5pm the BBQ’s will be lit for you to cook your own meat and enjoy a selection of salads provided by the village hall. Everyone is welcome.
