A FORMER Warrington councillor has been made a Freeman of Cheshire West and Chester at a ceremony at Chester Town Hall.
Kathy Benn, formerly of Grappenhall but who now lives in Helsby – who was awarded the MBE for public and political services in 1987 – was nominated for the new honour by Cllr Lyn Riley for her services to the community in Cheshire.
She has been a Trustee of Cheshire Community Action since 2001 and chairman since 2009. She is also chairman of the Community Pride Competition which celebrates community spirit across the county.
Kathy served as a parish councillor and as a borough councillor in Warrington for many years – once earning the nickname “a political dynamo.”
For many years she was House of Commons Secretary for the Warrington South Member of Parliament, and was Agent for Mark Carlisle for 23 years in the Runcorn Constituency.
She has also been Clerk to Alvanley and Manley Parish Councils.
Away from politics, Kathy worked for the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service Meals on Wheels and Library on Wheels and founded a Coffee Morning for the elderly in Grappenhall,  helping the housebound enjoy the company of other people.
She has worked in the voluntary sector for five decades.
Kathy is married to Jim, with four grown-up children and five grandchildren and has lived in Helsby for 29 years.
