A YOUNG seal found in a farmer’s field near Warrington has died after failing to respond to treatment for pneumonia.
The seal, nicknamed “Dumbledore” after the Harry Potter character, had been taken to the RSPCA’s wildlife hospital at Nantwich after a four hour rescue operation just before Christmas.
The “distressed and exhausted” sea mammal which was found near Newton Brook inbetween Winwick and Newton-le-Willows, never regained an appetite and despite the best available levels of care sadly died at the weekend.
The creature was rescued during a joint operation by police, fire officers, animal welfare officers and a farmer who herded it with brooms and metal fences into a RSPCA trailer.
The grey seal, found about 17 miles from the nearest coastline and is thought to have travelled up the River Mersey, before getting “lost”.
It was taken to the RSPCA’s hospital in Nantwich, Cheshire for a full assessment.
Dumbledore had received specialist care at the centre which is a home for more than 40 other rescue seals, all given names from the Harry Potter books.
