MORE than 850 residents are diagnosed with cancer in Warrington every year – and a campaign has been launched to encourage people to report potential symptoms earlier.
Cancer Research UK’s “Spot Cancer Early” awareness campaign is being piloted in Warrington as part of the Year of Action on Cancer.
A number of other initiatives will follow throughout Cheshire and Merseyside during the year.
The campaign is being run in collaboration with NHS Warrington and the Merseyside and Cheshire Cancer Network and aims to promote the benefits of the early diagnosis of cancer and encourage people to speak to their doctor if they notice any persistent or unusual changes to their health.
Dr Emily Power, Cancer Research UK health information manager, said: “Spotting potential signs or symptoms of cancer and getting them checked out by a doctor can mean that the disease is diagnosed earlier, before it has had a chance to spread to other parts of the body. When cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment is often simpler and more likely to be successful.
“Projects like this one in Warrington provide opportunities to raise awareness of the improvements that have been made in cancer treatment and can help prompt earlier presentation, but will also improve our understanding of what kinds of activities drive improvements in awareness and encourage people to take action.
“Improving the early diagnosis of cancer should help us to close the gap in survival rates between the UK and the rest of the world.”
Dr Sue Burke, who practices at Bewsey Street Medical Centre in Warrington, said: “It’s vital that individuals get to know their own body and what’s normal for them.
“If they notice any unusual or persistent changes to their health, it’s really important that they talk to their doctor about it as soon as possible. It may not be anything to worry about, in which case they’ll have nothing to lose. But if it’s something serious, they could have everything to gain.”
