Mystery of the M56 tragedy

POLICE are investigating the mystery of why a heavy lorry plunged from a bridge onto the M56 motorway near Warrington.
They say it is a miracle that only one person – the lorry driver – was killed in the incident at Junction 11 at Preston Brook at about 3.30pm yesterday.
The motorway is now open again and operating normally. But the investigation is likely to continue for some time.
Rush hour traffic in Warrington was held up last night as people travelling home from work were caught up in the chaos.
Police, fire services, ambulances and an air ambulance were called to the scene. But the lorry driver – named today as Tony Sainsbury, 42, from Walton, Liverpool – died at the scene.
His lorry, laden with household goods, plunged off the A56 and crashed down onto the motorway below. The drivers of two vehicles on the motorway were later treated for shock – but apart from that the only casualty was the lorry driver himself.
On theory is that he may have lost control of his lorry after suffering a heart attack.
The motorway re-opened at 4am today. The A56 was also closed for several hours.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who has any other information, has been asked to contact police on 0845 458 0000.
