CVS goes out with head held high

THE 102-year-old Warrington Council for Voluntary Service is holding an informal “farewell” event on Tuesday, prior to closing its doors for the last time at the end of the week.
Chief executive Nigel Bacon says the organisation will go out with its head held high.
He said: “We believe we have achieved a great deal and this view is supported by the many good wishes and notes of appreciation we have received since we first announced our closure.
“We have a lot to be proud of – and we are!”
The CVS is closing because of an “ever-worsening funding situation.”
Friends of the organisation are being invited to the “farewell” event at The Gateway in Sankey Street.
Writing in the last issue of the organisation’s newsletter, Mr Bacon says he feels sure it will become more valued after its demise.
Warrington Borough Council is putting local infrastructure support work out to tender so there will be continuing support for front line organisations.
“We have a thriving Third Sector in Warrington and this is still true, even after the reduction in size and, indeed, closure, of some organisations. We are not the only one which has closed its doors this year.
“All that activity, much of it stretching back over many years, is what is now called the Big Society. But don’t be fooled – we don’t need to be invented, we already exist.
“All we need is a bit of security, some funding and a lot of goodwill. Unfortunately it will all be too late for the CVS.”
The CVS has a considerable amount of furniture and equipment and anyone interested in acquiring anything should speak to Mr Bacon at The Gateway..

  1. How very sad to see the closure of such a worthwhile organisation. Whilst there is no funding available to keep the CVS open £125 MILLION has been ear-marked for the redevelopment of Bridge st. Big Society? Big Con more like!
