Town bids for Enterprise Zone

WARRINGTON is bidding for one of the new Enterprise Zones announced by the government as a means of boosting manufacturing.
The borough council has written to Chancellor George Osborne and Business Secretary Vince Cable expressing the authority’s interest in establishing an Enterprise Zone along the Winwick Road corridor.
Mr Osborne announced the first 21 Enterprise Zones in his budget speech. Among the first 10 – targeted as areas of highest need and potential – were Greater Manchester and Merseyside.
He said businesses in zones where there was a strong focus on manufacturing would get up to 100 per cent discount on rates, new superfast broadband and the potential to use enhanced capital allowances.
In return for radically reduced planning restrictions local authorities would get to keep business rate growth in their zones for a period at least 25 years to spend on development priorities.
Cllr Ian Marks, leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: “We have written to George Osborne and Vince Cable expressing our interest in an Enterprise Zones for the Winwick Road corridor.”
