How firms can cut through red tape

WARRINGTON Borough Council is urging local business to sign up to a new initiative to cut both red tape and costs – the Primary Authority scheme.
When it comes to complying with regulations that protect the public and the environment from harm, businesses with shops or depots in more than one council area run the risk of prosecution if inspectors from the separate local authorities differ in their interpretation of the rules.
The Primary Authority initiative provides reliable and consistent regulatory advice from a single source when dealing with environmental health, trading standards, health and safety and licensing services.
Seven businesses based in or trading in Warrington have already signed up to Primary Authority and representatives from these organisations attended the official launch of the scheme at the Town Hall.
Tony Phillips, risk manager for Hydes Brewery said: “The biggest plus for us is the time saving and the consistency in service we receive.”
Andy Farrall, executive director of environment and regeneration at the council said: “Local businesses that trade beyond the boundaries of Warrington can be even more confident in the advice given by our environment and public protection service team and reassured that they will not be confronted with contradictory advice from other regulators when it comes to complying with the law.”
The Primary Authority scheme is administered by LBRO, the public body responsible for better regulation.
Chairman Clive Grace said: “Warrington is demonstrating its commitment to better services to benefit the business community, the consumer and the environment. Primary Authority is about getting the regulatory system to work more efficiently for everyone’s good.”
Businesses can find out more about Primary Authority by visiting www.lbro.org.uk or calling 0121 226 4000 or contacting Warrington trading standards team via [email protected]
