Mini-supermarket scheme thrown out by planners

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have thrown out controversial proposals for a Sainsbury’s store at Woolston.
Nearby residents, Woolston Parish Council and local borough councillors all opposed the scene at the junction of Manchester Road and New Cut Lane.
Development management committee chairman Cllr Tony McCarthy vacated the chair so he could speak against the plan himself.
In the end, the committee voted to refuse permission for the scheme, which involved the conversion of the Mototow engineering and car sales building into a small supermarket.
Officers had recommended the scheme be approved.
Objections were based on traffic congestion, parking, highway safety, noise, privacy and lighting – partly due to the proposed opening hours of the new “mini market” which would have stayed open until 11pm.
