Big increase in use of fake IDs at clubs and bars

A HUGE increase in the use of fake or borrowed IDs at clubs and bars in Warrington has been reported.
As a result, the borough council is clamping down on the problem and warning teenagers that if they carry or use fake ID cards they a criminal offence and could be arrested.
In January and February alone, 110 driving licences and 25 passports were processed by the council having been confiscated in the town centre.
Several young people have been interviewed for the offence and attended “restorative justice” sessions which involved them understanding why using a fake, borrowed or altered ID is an issue for both the individual and the bar itself.
Peter Astley, assistant director, regulation and public protection, said: “The confiscated IDs have predominantly been taken from under 18 year olds by door staff and/or bar staff at town centre bars and clubs.
“This includes those lent to an under-age person, often by an older sibling or friend. The majority of confiscated IDs relate to 17 year old children.
“The use of fake IDs can get both the user and the bar into serious trouble including the bar or club losing their alcohol licence. Youngsters should understand that using a fake ID could land them in real trouble with the police and leave them with a criminal record.
“Many have also placed their sibling or friend at risk of prosecution by getting them to lend them their ID, which is also an offence.
“This can affect their job prospects, their chances of getting accepted for a place at college or university and even the opportunity to travel abroad.
“Door staff are trained to check for false IDs and will not be fooled.”
