Baking for pride

A RAINBOW Day Bake sale at Warrington raised money towards the town’s first-ever “Pride” event, to be held later this year.
Staff from Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) joined members of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual) Warrington for the event.
LGBT Warrington members baked rainbow inspired cakes and biscuits to sell to staff from GGHT, with the money going towards the Pride event, which will take place on September 29.
The sale marked the end of LGBT Month for GGHT – an annual event when the Trust organises a series of occasions to mark LGBY History month and educate its staff and customers about the importance of being inclusive to all people, regardless of their sexual orientation.
According to charity group Stonewall, 18 per cent of lesbian, gay and bisexual people expect to experience discrimination when applying for social housing in the North West.
GGHT is determined to ensure that this is not the case in Warrington and organised a variety of fun and engaging activities throughout the month.
These included putting information boards on sexual orientation in all of its customer reception areas and giving training to customers and staff to remove the myths and stereotypes that exist about the lesbian, gay and bisexual community.
The Trust has also recently created a borough-wide LGBT housing partnership with Arena Housing, Harvest Housing and Warrington Housing Association. The group will work with LGBT Warrington to tackle joint issues for lesbian, gay, bisexual and “trans” people.
Tenants who are interested in being part of this group and benefiting from the support it will offer should contact their landlord.
GGHT also plan to hold a series of events in July dedicated to raising the profile of “trans” issues.
Trust chief executive Peter Mercer, said: “It is disappointing that some people continue to experience discrimination, but as an organisation we are committed to ensuring we benefit all sections of our communities.
“The activities and training sessions we organised throughout the month have been received very positively by our staff and customers and we look forward to continuing to work with the Warrington LGBT housing partnership to tackle discrimination.”
