WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones joined young Usdaw members at their Warrington offices to highlight the shopworkers union’s campaign which is urging customers to “Keep Your Cool at Christmas”.
The MP had been addressing a weekend school for young members and was happy to add her voice to the union’s campaign.
Usdaw general secretary John Hannett said: “Things get busier in the shops in the run up to Christmas. When the queues are long and the high demand means that some items are out of stock, customers often feel angry and, unfortunately, they take this frustration out on the shopworker.
“Usdaw aims to ensure that employers are doing everything they can to minimise the problem by implementing measures that provide a safer working environment for staff. We want to see stronger measures being taken against those who perpetrate this unacceptable behaviour.”
Ms Jones said: “Shopworkers are appealing to the shopping public to keep their cool. People might be busy in the run up to Christmas and have a shorter fuse, but shopworkers will also be working extra hard and be under extra pressures. I would ask people to think twice before being abusive towards a shopworker, show them some respect and keep your cool at Christmas.”
