Multi-storey apartment block set to be re-clad following Grenfell tragedy

PLANS have been drawn up for a multi-storey apartment block in Warrington town centre to be re-clad with non-combustible materials in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Bryers Court, in Central Way, was built in the early 2000s and consists of 44 apartments spread over seven storeys.

The proposal is to remove combustible cladding and replace it with non-combustible cladding under the government’s building safety fund set up following Grenfell.
But the scheme will not change the appearance of what is said to be a fine example of re-developing a former industrial site.
Applicants Cheshire Lines Management Company Ltd say it will look exactly as it does now.
The work will cause some disruption for residents, but every effort will be made to minimise this.

Bryers Court is a modern building, adjoining other modern buildings. But is also close to the Grade 2 Listed former Cheshire Lines warehouse – now converted into apartments.
The scheme will mean Bryers Court – which has been classed as “high risk” following the report into the Grenfell tragedy – will comply with current building regulations and protect life in the event of a fire.
No internal works are proposed under the scheme.
Byers Court is described as a “handsome and prominent post modern building” providing a community asset.
Warrington Borough Council planners are now studying the proposals.
