“Digital library” helps Over Fifties get online

HOUSING chiefs at Warrington have announced a new “digital library” – giving tenants aged 50 or more access to free tablet computers, free wi-fi and one-to-one supports to help them get online.
Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) aims to offer their tenants the skills, confidence and tools they need to get on line.
The project which is running until June next year should enable tenants to access local service, save money, have fun and keep in touch with family or friends.
Kim Bate, GGHT regeneration officer, said: “It’s great helping people to get online, it’s like opening up a whole new world of fun, information, connectivity and friendship.
“By visiting and working with them regularly in their homes I get to see them grow in confidence, develop new skills.  Some have gone on to buy their own tablet, but if the internet is not for them, there is no pressure and we pass on the tablet to someone else.”
Penketh Court resident Beryl Holmes said: “The Digital Library is a brilliant idea.  Three months was just enough for me to learn the basics, and it has opened up a whole new online world.
“My friends and family are just a click away on email and Facebook.  I had never used the internet before, but using a tablet in my own home gave me the confidence I needed to get started.
“I will never look back and wish I had done it sooner.”
Anyone who would like to learn to get online should contact Kim at GGHT on 01925 452452, email [email protected], visit www.gght.org.uk/digilib or speak to their housing officer.
People who not fit the criteria for the project and want help getting online should check out www.go-onwarrington.co.uk  which has information on lots of free courses across the borough.
