A man from Warrington has been successfully prosecuted following a council investigation into a fly-tipping incident in Orford.
Liam Michael Byrne, of Sharp Street, Warrington, pleaded guilty at Warrington Magistrates’ Court to offences relating to the improper disposal of household waste and failing to provide information requested as part of the council’s investigation.
The case followed a report of fly-tipped waste that included carpets, underlay and items of furniture. An investigation by council officers traced the waste to an address in Warrington and identified Byrne as the occupier.
Enquiries confirmed that flooring works had recently taken place at the property, consistent with some of the waste discovered at the scene. Despite attempts to contact Byrne and provide him with an opportunity to explain how the waste had come to be fly-tipped, no response was received.
The matter was heard at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on 29 July 2026, where Byrne pleaded guilty to the offences.
Taking into account an early guilty plea, the court imposed a fine of £1,200, together with a victim surcharge of £400 and £620 towards costs and clear-up expenses, bringing the total financial penalty to £2,220.
The case highlights that residents have a responsibility to ensure their household waste is disposed of correctly and that they comply with requests for information made during environmental crime investigations.
Cllr John Kerr-Brown, cabinet member for environment, housing and public protection, said: “Everyone has a responsibility to ensure their household waste is disposed of correctly and legally. If you are handing your waste to someone else for disposal, carrying out a few simple checks beforehand can help prevent it from being fly tipped.
“If you are disposing of waste yourself, please use the council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres and other authorised disposal services.
“We also encourage residents to engage with our officers and respond to enquiries during investigations, helping us to keep Warrington clean, safe and welcoming for everyone.”
