Smoking – the big killer in the home

FIREFIGHTERS at Warrington are supporting No Smoking Day tomorrow (Wednesday) – with good reason.
Across Cheshire there were 239 fires related to smoking over the last 12 months- 18 per cent starting in living rooms and 15.9 per cent starting in bedrooms.
Smoking is the single biggest killer in accidental fires in the home, often because of careless behaviour such as smoking in bed or not taking care after drinking alcohol.
National statistics show that around a third of smoking related fires occur between 10pm and 3am, that nearly a third of all households have a smoker living in them and these households are nearly 38 per cent more likely to have a fire than non-smoking homes.
Sean Henshaw, Cheshire Fire Service’s service delivery manager for Warrington, said: “We are urging smokers to ‘Put it Out, Right Out’ either kicking the habit altogether, or ensuring that they always extinguish their cigarettes properly, especially last thing at night.
“As always, we urge people to ensure they have working smoke alarms on every level in their homes.  People are at least four times more likely to die in an accidental fire in the home without a working smoke alarm.”
