Police seek licence review at club

POLICE are seeking a review of the licence at a town centre nightclub in Warrington where they claim there has been a catalogue of violent incidents.
The latest incident at Panama Jack’s, in Bridge Street, arose because there were insufficient security staff.
A more serious incident was only avoided because of the intervention of security staff from other clubs and the arrival of police, according to Chief Supt Richard Strachan, head of Warrington Police.
The police has made representation to the borough council’s licensing committee for a review of the club’s licence.
Chief Supt Strachan said, in a statement to the committee: “This latest incident happened because there were insufficient security staff on duty and the number and type of customer in the venue was not being properly managed.
“Two innocent people were hospitalised and it was only through the intervention of door supervisors from other venues and police officers coming to assist that the incident was not more serious.
“So far three people have already been arrested and enquiries are continuing to trace further offenders.”
Police say the incident arose when members of a local football club were having a “night out” at the club.
An argument between two men resulted in one pushing the other, and the second man responding with a “haymaker punch” resulting in a glancing blow.
A melee then started involving a group of men and although security staff managed to evict some, the incident only ended when doormen from other clubs and the police intervened.
A woman and a security man were injured and taken to hospital.
The whole incident was captured on CCTV cameras.
Chief Supt Strachan added: “This is just the latest in a series of violent incidents at these premises. There are clearly problems with drunkenness, violent conduct and disorder that need to be urgently addressed by the management.”
