A special service took place at Soldiers’ Corner in Warrington Cemetery today, Sunday, to commemorate the anniversary of Anzac Day, earlier in the week on April 25.
Anzac Day commemorates the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand forces landing at Gallipoli during World War One, in 1915, and the thousands who gave their lives.
Soldiers from all over the Commonwealth are buried at Soldiers’ Corner, as Winwick Hospital was taken over as a military hospital during the First World War.
As the first citizen of the borough, the Mayor, Cllr. Steve Wright, marks the anniversary by laying a wreath at Soldiers’ Corner at Warrington Cemetery. He was joined by veterans and local cadets and members of the public at the annual event.
‘Anzac’ stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
The Last Post was played by Kelvin Dean, while the Australian Army was represented by Major Jihan Rome.
