Rain hits cricket for six

RAIN played a big part in the bank holiday weekend cricket programme in the Warrington area with a number of matches being abandoned or cancelled altogether.
Grappenhall, still looking for a win in the Vivio Cheshire County League premier division made a start at Alderley Edge but the matched was called off with Grappers on 45-3.
Warrington were 11-0 against Alvanley when the rain put an end to things. Warrington 2nd also had their game against Middlewich called off after they had batted first and scored 176-7, Ian Sleigh 70 not out. The home side were on 82-3 when the rains came.
Warrington 3rd’s game was cancelled altogether.
Warrington 4th were held to a draw by Ashley after hitting 190-8, Aaron Soni 63 not out, Nathan Jones 31 and Paul Higham 31. Ashley were 134-8 despite a fine spell from Jones who took 4-36.
Grappenhall 2nd managed to play at Broad Lane and claimed another great win. Visitors Brooklands hit a formidable 254-7. Grappenhall were struggling at 120-6 at one stage but a fine 50 from Iain Wright, a captain’s innings of 84 not out from Matt Titchard and 39 not out from Ben Cagna saw them home with two wickets to spare.
On Sunday, in more favourable weather, Grappenhall 3rd fell just short of a win over Bramhall who batted first and hit 184-3.  Arran McCabe took 3-44, Stanley Pennington 2-27 and Arthur Pennington 2-40. Grappenhall fell nine runs short, Matt Brown hitting 32 and Arthur Pennington 56.
In the TACS Partnership Cheshire League, Lymm Oughtrington Park dodged the showers to claim a seven wicket win over Haslington at Oughtrington Lane. The visitors were bowled out for 84, Matt Bradshaw taking 7-15 and Lymm cantered to 85-3 with Shahzad Butt top scoring with 42 not out.
Lymm Oughtrington Park 2nd hit a useful 181-9 at Poynton, Kerry Anderson top scoring with 40 and Dave Evans and Andy Hossack each  hitting 27. But the home side hit off the runs for the loss of only three wickets.
The Cheshire Alliance “derby” between Stretton and Glazebury resulted in a fine win for Glazebury.
Batting first, they hit 181-6, Scott Sparks 61 not out and Dave Acton 45. J Mir took 4-38 for the home side and followed this up with 36 with the bat. But it was not enough and Stretton were dismissed for 133, Acton taking 5-27.
Glazebury 2nd entertained Frodsham and bowled them out for 54, Dave Nicholson bagging 6-26. Paul Warhurst top scored with 20 as Glazebury replied with 56-4.
Stretton 2nd were particularly unlucky with the weather at Bowdon Vale when they amassed 253-4, Richard Taylor 55, Ben Southworth 66 and Andy Taylor 66 not out. Rain intervened before the home side could even start their innings.
Appleton won by five wickets at Stalybridge St Pauls where the home side were bowled out for 84 and Appleton 2nd had a good win at Knutsford where Appleton hit 212-4 and then dismissed the home side for 164.
Appleton 4th hit 177-6  against Port Sunlight, Kevan Lomas unbeaten on 96. Port Sunlight wer 117-3 when the game had to be abandoned, Patrick Traynor had taken 2-18.
Rylands 2nd were skittled out for 50 by Old Parkonians who raced to victory without loss.
