WARRINGTON will mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day next Friday, May 8 with a two-minute silence at 3pm which residents are invited to observe.
In the evening, there will be a special service at St Elphin’s Parish Church, at 8.30pm
Across the country more than 100 beacons will be lit to mark the occasion and Warrington’s beacon will be lit in the church grounds at 9.30pm, as part of the service.
VE Day represents the day, 70 years ago, when almost six years of war in Europe came to an end.
As a supporter of Warrington’s Armed Forces community, the Mayor, CllrTed Finnegan (pictured), will be attending the event to mark this poignant date in the town’s history.
Cllr Finnegan, said: “VE Day represents a huge milestone in our country’s past and we can’t let this day pass without commemorating the courage, determination and sacrifice of those who saw us through this dark period.
“The day will be a time to pay our respects to the men and women of the armed forces who gave their lives for their country, those who returned with an injured body, mind and spirit and everyone at home who suffered loss and hardship and also contributed to the war effort.
“I would be honoured to see residents joining me in lighting our beacon as we celebrate light emerging from the darkness of war.”
