A dad and daughter team from Warrington have produced a short film at zero cost on a smartphone which has recently won two awards at US film festivals.
Auditory, produced by JUstin Walker and starring his 12-year-old daughter Islien, follows a young girl who begins to experience ‘hearing voices.’ She explores her symptoms in various locations in an attempt to understand her current mental state.
Justin is hopeful that the film will create more awareness and understanding of psychosis. Auditory has won Best Experimental Film at the WILDsound Feedback Under 5 Minutes festival in Los Angeles and Best Micro Short Film at the Austin Art International Film Festival.
Auditory was shot and edited on a smartphone with no budget. It stars Islien who attends PQA (Pauline Quirke Academy) in Warrington.
Justin from Burtonwood, works for the Early Intervention Team within Wigan and Leigh. EIT support individuals from age 14 to 65 experiencing the first symptoms of psychosis.
He said: ‘I am absolutely thrilled to have won two awards for my short film Auditory, especially as the film was shot and edited on a smartphone at zero cost. It’s been a dream since I was 15 years old to be an award-winning Filmmaker, I guess dreams never truly die they just get put on the back burner.”
Islien added:”It’s amazing to be in a two-time award-winning film which also has an important message of creating more awareness of mental health issues, I’m so happy with the film and the part I played.”
It’s not the first time the double act has been involved in producing films on a smart phone. They also teamed up to produce a film on the impact of bullying and a Western which hit the Big Screen on a budget of just £60!
