A HEDGEHOG roaming the roads of Lymm was rescued  by police.
PC Becky Millyard was on patrol in the village when she came upon the hedgehog – named “Spike” by the police – in the road.
She put him in a place of safety – after posing for this charming picture!

  1. If it was found out in daylight there was possibly something wrong with it – it might have been better off if it had been taken to a local rescue to be checked out. Also, at this time of year, any autumn juveniles that are out and about are too small to hibernate and die if there’s a frost. A local rescue would have weighed the hog and checked it for parasites and treated it if necessary. http://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/found-a-hedgehog/

  2. Well said Helen- any hedgehog out and about during the day is in been of help unless finding food for a nearby nest of baby hogs- this is easy to spot.
Just moving it hasn’t really achieved anything. A call to a local rescue centre or google search would be more helpful

  3. Whilst I commend her for her unselfish actions I also echo other comments about it needing help. There’s only 1 reason for a hedgehog to be out in daylight normally, and its sick and needs urgent specialist help. At the very least it should be taken to a vet, or better still the local rescue.

  4. Sadly, that poor hedgehog has probably had a painful death. Any hedgehog seen out during the day (especially at this time of year) needs urgent help from a rescue. Although the PC was obviously trying to help, she hadn’t at all. I second all the comments above

  5. Seeing as we don’t actually know what the police did with the hedgehog, I think these remarks are uncalled for. I have no doubt the officer did the right thing.

    • The officer moved the hedgehog from one place to another in daylight which is fact and is stated from the article and is not helpful to a hedgehog. The officer may have thought about doing the right thing but unfortunately caused more harm than good so please read up on facts about how to help hedgehogs and pass on the information. The hedgehogs need our help more than the officer does

    • You are the one who is trying to read something that isn’t stated in the article- not the people who have commented with helpful advice about how to care for wildlife. The people commenting are doing so as they are interested in raising awareness about what to do if a hedgehog is found in the day which is commendable

  6. O(f course it is commendable to give advice about how to care for wild life. But you people seem more interested in knocking the police. How do we know the hedgehog was not take to a rescue centre or a vet?

    • I am a police officer myself which is why I read the story in the first place but I also have an understanding of how to help wildlife. I hardly think people who are interested in helping hedgehogs have something against the police!
The article states it was moved to a place of safety- if it had been taken to a vet or sanctuary it would say so it could be bad reporting. If the hedgehog was taken to a centre or vet then the police can update the story- as can the journalist who I am sure will be reading these comments. It would be great to see an update on the progress of the hedgehog
