AN estimated 5,300 children are in families trapped in “energy debt” in Warrington North, according to figures released by The Children’s Society.
MP Helen Jones has expressed shock at the number of families who have fallen behind on their energy bills.
She said: “ These figures are shocking and highlight the real impact of the cost of living crisis.
“The Children’s Society have rightly highlighted the growing problem. As well as offering some simple measures, people can take to save energy and stay warm such as turning off lights and electrical appliances when not in use and setting washing machines to 30 degrees C.
“They are calling on energy companies to talk to people and offer a range of different repayment rates.
“More and more families are being trapped in energy debt and the recent cold snap will not have helped. “We need to be looking at ways to help these families get themselves out of the plight they are in.”
The Children’s Society have produced a list of top tips to save energy and stay warm.
Windows and doors can be sealed with cheap insulation tape, tumble dryers should only be used when necessary and washing machines set to 30 degrees C.
Radiators and heaters should be kept clear, so no items are in front of them, curtains and blinds should be closed in the evening, lights and electrical appliances should be turned off when not in use.
Energy companies are being asked to talk to people about the rate they can afford to pay back debt, people should be offered a range of different repayment rates and companies should check with people on a regular basis to make sure adjustments are needed to repayment plans.
