WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols cooked up a recipe for success by joining Creating Adventures for their cookery class in the Orford Hub on Hughes Avenue recently.
Creating Adventures was founded in 2016 by Jenny Allcock with the aim of providing support for adults with autism, and learning disabilities. The service provides new opportunities, increases confidence and develops social skills. Creating adventures hosts regular and varied activities including cooking, social events, dance, music and much more.
Jenny Allcock said: “When children with additional needs reach the age of eighteen, many of the services around them fall away leaving them alone and in some cases, totally isolated. This really struck a chord with me, and I wanted to do something about it. So, I set up Creating Adventures”.
Creating Adventures hosts its cooking club every Tuesday afternoon where people who use the service learn to cook meals that they can make again at home either by themselves or with a little support. They learn how to safely use appliances, how to safely chop and how to season and add flavour to dishes. Each aspiring chef also has their own jobs which are all vital in a working kitchen including cleaning down the tables, washing the dishes, and preparing the table for eating.
The cookery class is led by former food technology teacher Kerry and is supported by a team of volunteers. The cooking club has been so successful that Creating Adventures launched their own cook book called “recipes for success” which has been featured on Sky News and Cheshire Life.
Ms Nichols said: “I had the most fun this afternoon at the weekly cookery class “Recipes for success” with Creating Adventures at the Orford Community Hub!
On the menu was leak and potato soup, with garlic bread, which was chosen for Oliver whose favourite film is Ratatouille. I’ve never made it from scratch before so was excited to try my hand, and I’m pleased to say that everyone absolutely smashed it- verdicts ranged from 10/10 to 100/10.
It was such a lovely, warm and welcoming environment to pick up new skills and develop confidence in the kitchen. Thank you to Creating Adventures for having me along to see the amazing work they do to support adults with autism and learning disabilities to socialise, have fun and grow their independence.
The cooking sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and there’s a range of other activities including the choir, yoga, brass band, dancing and more. If you or someone you know could benefit from sessions like this, get in touch with creating Adventures via their social media or on their website here: www.creatingadventures.org.uk”.
