HELSBY High School has won a place in a list of the 30 best state sports schools of the year. The list is compiled by School Sport Magazine – and Helsby was voted in at 15.

There are more than 3,000 state secondary schools in England so the award carries considerable prestige. A top 30 position reflects competitive achievement in a range of sports throughout the year and is given to schools that take competition seriously.

The list is based on 20 different sports and results in more than 120 different national competitions. Head of PE Paul Park said: “This national recognition is testament to the hard work and dedication of all the boys and girls in our sports teams as well as the support and commitment of all members of the PE department.

The fact that of the 14 schools placed ahead of us at least eight have selective admissions policies (grammar schools) makes the achievement even more notable.
