Council manager's close shave

A WARRINGTON Borough Council manager has had half his head shaved, and his chest waxed, in order to raise cash for charity to support a courageous team member battling a brain tumour.
Tim Smith, Principal Manager, of Warrington Borough Council’s Employment, Learning and Skills team has been growing his hair and beard since November 1. On Friday December 13, he let the rest of his team shave one half of his head – hair and beard. And just to complete the job, they waxed his chest as well. Tim has pledged to keep his new look for at least a week, including during his Christmas shopping.
The stunt was organised in aid of Karan Waller, mum-of-two, aged 36, a member of Tim’s team who was diagnosed with a grade 2 astrocytoma, a brain tumour, after collapsing at home in 2009.
After the first operation, Karan could hardly recognise her own children but through family photos and videos, her memory came back. However, despite several surgical procedures, the growth has now returned, and surgeons have told her they are unable to operate again.
Karan is being supported by the Astro Brain Tumour Fund, a charity focusing on funding research into low-grade brain tumours and Karan’s work colleagues are raising money to support them.
Colleagues at St Werburgh’s Development Centre recently held a fund raising day on 27th November, including dressing down, a cake stall, tombola and a huge raffle where prizes were donated by the community and local businesses. A charity football tournament at Orford Park on 4th December also added to the amount raised for the charity. Tim has been showing off his new haircut around the Council offices, and colleagues have taken the total raised to over £1,000.
He said: “Karan is a true inspiration to us all at St Werburgh’s. The staff and I wanted to show our appreciation and gratitude to the Astro Brain Tumour Fund for the support that they provide to Karan and her family. I had half an idea to do something. And this was it.”
