Obstructive parking leads to ban

COUNCIL chiefs at Warrington propose to ban waiting on a number of roads where motorists are causing traffic hazards through obstructive parking.
Roads involve are Portland Road, Houston Gardens and Union Square at Chapelford.
The no waiting order will affect both sides of Portland Road near its junction with Rockford Gardens and the north side of Portland Road near its junction with Montgomery Close.
It will also involve both sides of Houston Gardens near its junction with Portland Road and both sides of Portland Road near its junction with Houston Road.
Both sides of Union Square, near its junction with Portland Road, will also be subject of the ban.
A council spokesman said: “The highway on Portland Road, Chapelford is soon to be adopted and maintained by the council.
“Following parking surveys, it was noted that a number of motorists are parking their vehicles in an obstructive manner on the bends and junctions of Portland Road. This is impacting visibility and causing cars to meet head on and then dangerous reversing manoeuvres have to be undertaken in order for one motorist to give way to another.
“It is felt necessary to implement waiting restrictions on certain parts of Portland Road. “

  1. It’s good to see some action taking place.

Near-by at Ross Close I have been lobbying for 3 years on behalf of my Visually Impaired passengers and their mini bus drivers. We the drivers who transport our passengers, from their homes to the Fairfield & Howley Community Centre, have been asking for double yellow lines to be painted on the corner of Ross Close. We find great difficulty trying to take home our passengers home especially when schools empty of an afternoon. But not exclusively as we often go into other closes where residents park on the road to create obstacles – it is particularly annoying when their drives are empty.

You just wouldn’t believe the obstacles through parking that some parents create. They even park on paths leading to the local shop in a way that one resident can physically get past!

The head of the local primary like many others tries hard to educate the parents and I am very grateful for their efforts. At the school near Ross Close things have improved from time to time especially when traffic cones where placed on the bend, it really made manoeuvring a mini bus into the close so much easier. However these gradually were removed and placed elsewhere and eventually they disappeared. As soon as we get through this obstacle then we have to face the idiot who parks his waggon on a small road off the close and provides yet another obstacle – when I complained to the highways they said “yes we can see him on Google earth!!!!” But at least they agreed there was an issue and started to monitor what was going on and survey local opinion because it was affecting all residents.

Over a year ago I heard that approval had been given – great I thought – but no not just yet as a pair of local chiefs wanted to include two more roads. This went out for consultation but the residents of the additional roads couldn’t agree, so this idea was shelved.

Great I thought as I got a phone call to say the lines would be done soon – well almost soon. These things have to be advertised in the press which costs lots of money and Ross Close notice will have to be batched up with others to reduce costs.

Oh well my passengers have waited 3 years what is another month or so as long as it gets sorted? Well it may their careers that are on a tight schedule with their medication will have to wait, accidents may happen especially bumps and scrapes and tempers will be raised, all because people do not think about where they park. This problem is not confined just the area I write about it happens throughout Warrington so those people who say that we should change our route should think again.

  2. I would like to know why the double yellow lines stop outside the cinema at Westbrook. They stop about 20 yards from the roundabout off Westbrook Crescent and idiots park up to the end of the lines and right down to the roundabout. Westbrook is blessed with a massive, free car park for both the cinema and ASDA which is why I cannot understand the logic of someone in the authority not to have told the contractor to join them up to prevent parking on what is a blind corner.

  3. Obstructive parking is at the epidemic stage throughout the borough. Go to any of the suburbs in Warrington, never mind the town centre, and you will see mindless, discourteous and/or obstructive on virtually every road every day. I regularly visit an old dear friend who lives in a quiet cul-de-sac with only three houses. It is often difficult to get on to her drive (she has no car) because people regularly choose to park in the turning area at the top of the c-d-s, even though there is plenty of space available in the rest of that small road. One mindless soul parks there even though he lives a street away.
