A WARRINGTON project that helps stop young people re-offending is being backed by a local MP.
Helen Jones, MP for Warrington North, is supporting the innovative project which identifies and supports young people with a range of health needs, including mental health issues, who come into contact with the police in order to reduce re-offending.
The Warrington and Halton Youth Offending Team engages with young people that come into contact with the police and assesses them to identify any areas of vulnerability such as mental health issues and learning disabilities or difficulties.
Working jointly with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services the team then coordinates support and therapy to prevent re-offending and support improved life chances.
The MP said: “Children and young people who end up in custody are three times more likely to have a mental health need and it is essential to reduce re-offending so that the right diagnosis and support is available.
“The pilot scheme here in Warrington is achieving some great results and I’ve pledged to offer any support that I can to allow the team to continue their work.”
