Drink fuels domestic abuse

NEARLY half the domestic abuse incidents reported in Warrington and the rest of Cheshire involve people who have been drinking.
Alcohol is not the root cause of domestic abuse, but as it has the ability to remove inhibitions or impair judgement, it can aggravate an existing situation, say police.
Det Sgt Angela Burns, from the Cheshire Police Strategic Public Protection Unit said:”It can never be an excuse to abrogate responsibility for domestic abuse, which includes psychological, physical, sexual or emotional abuse.
“Whilst we encourage responsible drinking, we also take a zero tolerance attitude towards anyone who abuses someone they live with, whether alcohol is a factor or not.
“Domestic abuse should never be tolerated. It often impacts not only on the victim but can have a significant impact on children within the household, or other family members.”
The police have specialist officers with experience within this area, and work closely with partner agencies who can offer support and advice to victims of domestic abuse.
All incidents of domestic abuse should be reported. If someone is in immediate danger the 999 emergency telephone number should be used.
In other circumstances police can be contacted through the normal information line 0845 458 0000.
The Cheshire Police website has information for victims and offers an online reporting system for anyone who suspects that someone they know is involved in a domestic abuse situation. The website also has links to partner agencies who can offer help and support.
The website address is www.cheshire.police.uk
Cheshire Police is currently running a “Good Bad and Ugly” summer campaign to highlight the dangers of drinking too much. It is timed to coincide with the barbecue and party season when many people drink more, both when going out and when they are at home.
