Distraction burglaries warning

POLICE are warning people in Warrington of the danger of distraction burglaries as thieves take advantage of the lighter nights and warmer weather.
They say this type of crime generally increases at this time of year and warn people, especially the elderly and vulnerable, not to let strangers into their home.
From May to September last year there were eight incidents of distraction burglaries in Warrington.
Police are committed to tackling the issue and is urging people and those with elderly relatives, friends or neighbours, to be aware.
Detective Inspector Matt Durcan said: “Any form of burglary is disturbing as it targets people in the one place they should feel safest – their home.
“But distraction burglaries and bogus caller incidents are particularly despicable as the offenders deliberately set out to cause misery to people who are the least likely to be able to defend themselves – the elderly and vulnerable.”
Police urge people to use a door chain when answering the door, check identification and, if in doubt, call their company.
He said others use elaborate stories, such as a lost pet, to gain access and can appear very genuine.
Police advise locking all doors and windows when at home and to look out of a spy hole or window to see who is calling. Residents are also advised to set up passwords with water, gas and electric companies.
People should be aware that one person may distract them while another steals property. Police advise never using trades people who call at the door. Only traders who have been recommended should be used. Suspicious incidents should be reported to the police.
DI Durcan said: “Do not be afraid to call us if you think a relative, friend or neighbour is being targeted in this way. The more information we have, the better we are able to build evidence and take action against those responsible.”
People can call police on 0845 458 0000, or pass on information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Further information can be found by logging onto www.cheshire.police.uk
