A warning for motorists

POLICE are warning motorists in Warrington to be on their guard following an increase in thefts of valuables from cars.
Drivers across the borough are being urged to reassess their current security measures and remain vigilant.
An increase in thefts of valuables from vehicles – with the Chapleford Estate and Grappenhall being current hot spots for this type of crime – has led to the police initiative.
Patrols have been increased in these areas at key times and officers are actively targeting those responsible.
The majority of thefts have taken place overnight from vehicles that have been left unlocked with valuable items, such as satnavs, mobile phones and laptops, left on show inside.
Detective Sergeant Adrian Priest said: “We are urging motorists to remain security conscious at all times and to ensure their vehicle is locked and secure whenever it is left unattended, and for any valuable items to be left out of sight.
“We cannot stress how important it is for drivers to ensure that their vehicle is locked and secure when it is unattended – even for a few seconds. Thieves have been known to simply try car doors looking for those that are not locked, rather than having to force entry.”
He said it only takes an opportunistic thief a minute to open the door and snatch something from inside. He said that thieves have even been known to steal loose change that has been left on show.
Drivers are being urged to ensure a vehicle is locked, even if left for a few seconds, activate the alarm and/or steering lock and to remove any valuable items – not just hide them in the glove box or under the seat.
Police advise removing sat navs and the fascia of car stereos, and to park in a busy, well-lit area or secure garage.
DS Priest said: “We are committed to tackling vehicle crime and local officers are doing all they can to reduce the number of thefts from vehicles in the town.
“Members of the public are being urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity during the day – or night – to police immediately.”
Anyone who has any information in relation to vehicle crime in Warrington is urged to call Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000, or anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
