200 drink drivers arrested

CHESHIRE police have finally revealed the results of their Christmas clampdown on drink drivers – during which more than 200 people were arrested.
During December officers conducted 4,262 roadside breath tests and 201 drivers were found to be over the limit. In addition 57 drug tests were conducted which resulted in a further nine people arrested – all of them men.
It was part of a national campaign and ran from December 1 to January 1, testing drivers at all times of the day and night.
Overall drivers aged between 26 and 35 accounted for 31 per cent of the total arrested, with people aged 17 to 25 the second highest group. In total 160 men were arrested compared to just 41 women. Police say this indicates that men still need to take note of the warnings.
Half of all the arrests were made between 1am and 7am and nearly a quarter between 9pm and midnight.
Road liaison officer Mike Jones said: “Those caught drink driving only account for five per cent of all the tests conducted in the period which demonstrates that a large majority of drivers are behaving sensibly.
“We have known for some time that young people, especially young men, are a cause for concern. Drink driving is a year-long issue and Cheshire Police are committed to seeking out those that continue to act irresponsibly throughout 2010.”

  1. 210 too many… I hope they were all banned ! Well done to the police !

As most people are more than aware of the increase in police presence and road side testing over the xmas period it makes you wonder how many over the limit drivers are on the roads at other times of the year when they presume to coast is somewhat clearer and they may get away with it !

  2. More worrying is the ones they did not arrest? This sort of Police clamp down should be a regular event, especially at weekends around Warrington town centre.
