A £45m funding boost for Warrington Schools from the Government’s Building Schools for the Future Scheme has been welcomed by Warrington North MP Helen Jones.
Children’s Schools and Families secretary Ed Balls announced the funding, which is likely to boost ongoing projects to rebuild or refurbish many of the borough’s primary and secondary schools.
Launched by the Department for Education and Skills in 2004, the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme is the largest and most ambitious scheme of its kind anywhere in the world.
It enables local authorities to rebuild and renew school buildings, rather than patching them up. Culcheth High School is one project which has already benefited from the programme.
The investment was welcomed by Warrington North MP Helen Jones , pictured above receiving a cheque from Ed Balls. She said: “This is yet another significant investment in Warrington.”
A spokeswoman for Warrington Borough Council said four schools should benefit from the scheme – William Beamont High, Lysander High at Padgate, Penketh High and Sir Thomas Boteler CE High.
Coun Sheila Woodyatt, the borough’s executive member for children’s services, said: “Our children and young people deserve modern schools and the very best facilities.
“We already have one BSF scheme underway in the borough in the shape of the new Culcheth High School and thanks to another successful BSF bid; many more pupils attending four more schools will soon benefit from top class facilities.
“I personally am really looking forward to seeing this project take shape and the difference it will make not only to pupils and teachers, but also to the local communities.”
