Townson at the double for Town!

TWO first half goals from Kevin Townson were enough to secure Warrington Town all three points in a 2-1 victory at Wakefield.
Town manager Shaun Reid introduced the club’s two new signings Ciaran Kilheeney (pictured top) and Adam Mitter (pictured bottom) into the starting line, and both were to have an impact on their debuts for the club.
Town started the better of the two teams and took the lead in their first real attack, Kevin Townson, (pictured right) adding to his four goals in the 7-1 midweek victory at Mossley, reaching an excellent through ball to poke home before the advancing Wakefield goalie Neil Bennett could get there.
Within two minutes, the home side were level, Wakefield midfielder Adam Cooper being given time and space on the edge of the penalty area, to curl home a shot through a packed penalty area and beyond Andy Robertson in the Town goal.
Town hit the front once again soon afterwards, Kilheeney finding a yard of space in the Wakefield penalty area to get a head to Phil Davies’ cross, only to see Bennett save at full length, however, Townson was following up and slotted home into the unguarded net.
Three minutes later, and Townson almost had his hat trick, meeting left back Phil Doran’s cross, only to see Bennett save well with his legs. Town were now in total control of the game, and it was Kilheeney who went close soon afterwards, a fine piece of skill on the edge of the penalty area, brought himself some space, but shot too close to Bennett, who was able to make another fine save.
Lee Parle was next to go close for Town, heading a Davies cross narrowly the wrong side of the upright, as Town continued to press for a third goal. Just on the half hour, and it was Kilheeney who went close once again, reacting first to a long clearance by Robertson, only to shoot too close to Bennett once again. As the half wore down, Town continued to look for another goal and midfielder Phil Mooney went close just before half time, shooting narrowly over the cross bar from the edge of the box.
Wakefield looked a different side after half time, and had a great chance to equalise soon after the restart, striker Shane Hamilton failing to connect with a dangerous throughball when through on goal. As the half went on, and both sides introduced a number of substitutes to proceedings, the game opened on the very wide Rapid Solicitors Stadium pitch, with far more space meaning more long passes from both teams.
The two best chances falling to the home team, midfielder Tom Marsden shooting wide from distance before fellow midfielder Lee Turner met Marsden’s cross only to shoot across the face of Robertson’s goal. The introduction of Ash Ruane and Allan Collins from the bench gave Town fresh impetus going forward, with Ruane in particular, causing problems with his pace for the home defence, it was he, who set up Kilheeney for Town’s best chance of the half, seeing his shot deflected narrowly over the crossbar by Wakefield defender Chris Hitchins.
As the game wore on, Wakefield looked to hit Town on the break, but, due to excellent defending from all of the Town defenders, the best that they could muster was a long range shot by full back Dave Pickering, who saw his shot easily saved by Robertson.
Town are back in action on Tuesday when they entertain Radcliffe Borough, kick off 7.45pm.
