Future hope for Fiddle i’th Bag site as new owner outlines vision

THE once-beloved local landmark between Burtonwood and Winwick — the Fiddle Inn i’th Bag pub — was demolished this week following safety concerns, marking the end of an era for a building that has stood in the memories of many residents for decades.

The Fiddle i’th Bag, affectionately remembered for its charm and its unusual name drawn from Cheshire folklore, closed its doors around eight years ago and has since fallen into severe disrepair. Despite campaigns by local groups hoping to see the pub restored, years of fire damage, vandalism, and structural decline left the building unsafe and beyond economic repair.

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that the site had been purchased by a local private investor, who has now shared hopes for the next chapter of the site.
The new owner explained that while restoring the pub was simply not viable, their plans aim to bring life and opportunity back to the location — not just for their own business, but for the wider community.
“My family and I have many fond memories of Sunday roasts at the Fiddle i’th Bag, so we completely understand the affection people have for it,” the owner said in a post to the Fiddle i’th Bag Appreciation Group on Facebook.
“Sadly, a structural report confirmed the building was unsafe, and demolition was the only responsible course of action. But we want to do something positive with the site — something that supports local employment, fits the rural setting, and brings people together again.”
The owner’s vision for the site includes new office space for an existing Warrington-based business, alongside the potential creation of shared workspace or a business incubator hub for new and growing enterprises. There is also an option being explored for a small community café, offering a welcoming spot for residents and local workers alike.

How the site could look in the future

While some long-time supporters of the “Save the Fiddle i’th Bag” campaign have expressed sadness at the loss of the original building, there has also been cautious optimism that the proposed development could help turn a derelict and unsafe site into a new asset for the area.
Local councillors and community representatives have noted that, handled sensitively, this could become an example of heritage-inspired regeneration — blending respect for the site’s past with the practical needs of today’s community and economy.
No planning application has yet been submitted, but the owner has said they are keen to bring the site back to life as soon as possible.
Further details and plans are expected to be submitted to Warrington Borough Council in the coming months, and residents will have the opportunity to view and comment once the application is live.
For many across Burtonwood, Winwick and beyond, the Fiddle i’th Bag will always hold a special place — a meeting spot, a Sunday tradition, a piece of local history.
Now, as the site prepares for a new chapter, the hope is that its spirit of community and hospitality will continue, just in a new form.
