Residents turn out in force to oppose Peel Hall homes plan

MORE than 100 residents turned out to voice their opposition against the controversial plan to build 1,200 homes on land at Peel Hall, Warrington, on the opening day of a public inquiry.

Developers Satnam are appealing against the refusal by Warrington Borough Council to grant planning consent for the development.
The hearing at the Orford Jubilee Hub is expected to take up to 14 days.

Inspector Richard Schofield opened the proceedings followed by opening speeches made by David Manley QC for the council and Christopher Lockhart-Mummery for Satnam.

Two witnesses were then called by Satnam, its planning director Colin Robinson and horticulturist David Appleton, both arguing the case for development claiming that Peel Hall was “suitable and sustainable.”

Mr Robinson went on further to claim that the development, described as a “mixed-use neighbourhood” would have a positive impact on local economy. But his comments met with fierce criticism from residents who refuted his claims by saying that any “future” jobs would not benefit people living in Warrington and would possibly attract people travelling into the town for work and not giving any worthwhile employment to townsfolk.

Campaigner Wendy Johnson-Taylor said: “We were pleased with the turnout. We know that hundreds of residents would like to attend this hearing but simply cannot due to work commitments. I hope the inspector understands this and we will be emphasising this when we speak next week.”

She added: “It was good to see many residents being keen, not being intimidated and getting up and asking the right questions. They were clearly questioning the content of the presentations put forward on behalf of landowner Satnam.

“This appeal is listed for 14 days, although the Inspector isn’t sitting every day. We cannot stress to residents enough that attendance here it is very important, and we are urging everyone to try to stand with us at some point, even if it’s only for an hour. It all counts.”

Warrington North MP Helen Jones – a long standing opponent of the development  – attended the hearing alongside local parish and borough councillors.

The Inspector confirmed that a site visit with all parties concerned will take place this Thursday and that residents who wish to speak will be able to do so on Friday, May 4th.

The final decision on the future of Peel Hall will be made by the Secretary of State.
