WARRINGTON Borough Council is looking for three members of the public prepared to serve on the body that investigates allegations of potential misconduct by local councillors.
The Standards Committee meets at least six times a year and three members of the public – known as “independent persons” are request to serve on the committee and act as advisors.
Applicants must be prepared to serve initially for two years, with the possibility of an extension to a four year term.
The meetings are held on Thursday evenings at the Town Hall and applicants will need to be available for these
meetings.
Independent persons cannot be or have been in the past five years a
councillor, co-opted member or employee of the council or a relative or close friend of such a person.
Closing date for applications is Monday, May 20 and interviews will be held on Wednesday, May 29.
The law requires that a local council must promote and maintain high standards of conduct by its members and co-opted members, and parish councillors within the borough.
To do so the council must have a Member Code of Conduct, and
arrangements under which allegations can be investigated, and decisions on allegations be made.
The council must also appoint an Independent Person or Persons to advise on breaches of the Member Code of Conduct.
When any complaint about a possible breach of the Code of Conduct by a
councillor is made, the Monitoring Officer will consult the Independent Person about either whether it is appropriate to seek an informal resolution; not to investigate the matter further or to carry out an investigation.
More details and application forms are available from the council’s head of democratic and member services, Bryan Magan, on 01925 442120 or 01925 442111
