A WARRINGTON-based charity set up in memory of a local youngster who died tragically while playing at school will be honoured at a national award ceremony on Friday, May 17.
“Ciaran’s Cause” was established in member of seven-year-old Ciaran Geddes who suddenly collapsed while enjoying a kick-about at Locking Stums Primary School, Birchwood.
He was rushed to Warrington Hospital but sadly died.
Ciaran’s Cause was set up in his memory to help raise funds to supply schools and sports clubs with defibrillators, so that hopefully another family doesn’t have to go through the heartbreak that Ciaran’s parents, Marika and Steff have been through.
Cieran’s Cause will be presented with a Community Defibrillator Award at the national cardiac charity SADS UK Annual National Community Defibrillators awards attended by cardiologists and emergency services personnel.
Dr David Pitcher, cardiologist and chairman of the Resuscitation Council (UK) will present the prestigious award to Cieran’s mother Marika and Trustee Cheryl Stewart.
A defibrillator is the only piece of equipment that will restore the heart rhythm.
If a person goes into cardiac arrest it is crucial that a therapeutic shock is delivered by the defibrillator as quickly as possible. This gives the person the best chance of survival.
The defibrillator is easy and safe to use providing voice prompts to the rescuer to help them.
Anne Jolly, founder of SADS UK, the Ashley Jolly SAD Trust, said:
“SADS UK are pleased to honour Ciaran’s Cause for donating defibrillators in the community in memory of Ciaran.
“If a person suffers a sudden cardiac arrest CPR provides a five per cent chance of survival but using CPR along with the defibrillator increases the chance of survival to over 50 per cent”.
