A man accused of murdering a much-loved headteacher who was killed while cycling home from work near Lymm has pleaded not guilty.
Simon Richardson, 35, is accused of the murder of Michael Mullins, 56, who died after being struck by a black Volvo XC90 on Paddock Lane, near Lymm, on April 20.
Mr Mullins was headteacher of Stretford Grammar School, a position he had held for 17 years. He was cycling home when he was hit at around 6.10pm at the junction of Paddock Lane, Warburton Lane and Dunham Road.
Richardson, of no fixed address, was subsequently charged with murder, manslaughter, dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving without insurance. He has remained in custody.
The case has now progressed to the Crown Court, with Richardson having denied the murder allegation. A preliminary hearing at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court in July determined that he will stand trial for murder.
The death shocked the local community, with tributes describing Mr Mullins as a devoted family man as well as a highly respected school leader.
The murder trial is expected to hear evidence surrounding the circumstances of the collision and the events which followed.
