WARRINGTON darts sensation Luke Littler remains on course to complete his collection of major titles after producing a stunning performance to reach the quarter-finals of the European Championship in Germany.
The 19-year-old world champion defeated fellow Englishman Nathan Aspinall 10-5 in Dortmund on Saturday night, October 24, recording a remarkable three-dart average of 114.47.
The performance was the second-highest average in the history of the tournament, surpassed only by Phil Taylor’s record of 118.14.
Littler made a blistering start, racing into a 4-0 lead as he punished Aspinall with a series of outstanding legs.
Aspinall, who hit 10 maximum 180s during the contest, fought back to close the gap to 5-4. However, Littler regained control and powered through to secure his place in the last eight.
The victory followed a 6-3 win over Ireland’s William O’Connor in the opening round on Friday night.
One major title still missing
Littler is chasing the European Championship crown, one of the few major titles missing from his already impressive collection.
The Warrington star arrived in Germany looking to get back to winning ways following disappointing exits at the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam and the World Grand Prix.
His latest display suggests he is finding his best form at the right time, with £150,000 awaiting the eventual tournament winner.
The competition is being staged at the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final all taking place on Sunday, October 25.
Littler’s quarter-final opponent is Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski, who defeated Kevin Doets 10-8 in the second round.
Victory would take Littler another step closer to claiming the European Championship for the first time.
