DESPITE a 2–1 defeat to Stockton Town, decided by a controversial late penalty, Warrington Rylands secured a 4th-place finish in the Northern Premier League Premier Division and will head into the play-offs to face FC United of Manchester.
As manager, Neil Reynolds prepares to face the club he left just 20 months ago, he described it as a “written in the stars” encounter.
Rylands’ position was already guaranteed regardless of the result, but Stockton needed the win to secure their own play-off place, with rivals close behind throughout the afternoon.
In a closely contested first half played in hot conditions, Stockton took the lead after capitalising on a mistake from stand-in goalkeeper Harry Ascroft. Despite multiple defensive efforts, the ball eventually crossed the line.
Rylands improved after the break, and substitutions around the 60-minute mark proved effective. Sam Muyengwa, full of energy and determination, burst onto the scene. Just seven minutes later, he carved his way through a stubborn defence and fired home the equaliser—his first league goal—igniting hope among the Rylands faithful.

Kevin Hayes converted from the spot in the 80th minute, sealing victory for Stockton.
Manager Reynolds emphasised that reaching the play-offs was the club’s main objective, crediting the achievement to everyone involved—from players to directors to volunteers and supporters.
Rylands now turn their focus to a semi-final clash against FC United of Manchester at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday evening. The tie adds extra intrigue, as Reynolds left FC United just 20 months ago—setting up what he described as a potentially “written in the stars” encounter.
