A SPECIAL service of remembrance marking the Battle of Britain brought together Air Cadets, civic dignitaries, veterans and members of the Warrington community at St Elphin’s Parish Church at the weekend.

The annual Battle of Britain Service of Remembrance, Praise and Thanksgiving was organised by 1330 (Warrington) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets and took place on Sunday afternoon.
Among those attending was the Mayor of Warrington, Councillor Sagheer Zaman, who joined cadets, staff and members of the public in remembering the courage and sacrifice of those who defended Britain’s skies during the Second World War.
The service featured readings, musical performances and acts of remembrance, with Warrington Brass Band also taking part.
The Battle of Britain, fought during the summer and autumn of 1940, saw RAF aircrew and ground personnel defend Britain against the Luftwaffe in a campaign which became one of the defining moments in the history of the Royal Air Force.

For the young members of 1330 Squadron, the annual service provides an opportunity not only to remember those who served and sacrificed their lives, but also to understand the history and traditions of the RAF and the importance of service to others.
The poignant gathering at St Elphin’s reflected the continuing importance of remembrance in the town, bringing together different generations to honour those who played their part in defending the country.

1330 Squadron has strong links with the Warrington community and has been serving the town for more than 80 years. Established in 1941, the squadron is now one of the largest RAF Air Cadet squadrons in the country, with more than 100 young people involved.
The Squadron’s Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Alan Radcliffe, has previously highlighted the importance of community involvement and giving young people opportunities to develop confidence, leadership skills and a sense of service.
The Battle of Britain service continues that tradition, ensuring that the story of those who defended Britain in 1940 is remembered by a new generation.
As the congregation gathered at St Elphin’s, the message of remembrance remained as relevant as ever – honouring the bravery and sacrifice of those who served while reflecting on the importance of peace for future generations.
