Bargains galore at historic Winwick church attic sale

CUSTOMERS browsing the contents at St Oswald’s Church Winwick attic sale on Saturday, April 13, will be treated to a selection of unmissable bargains some with connections to Warrington’s history.

The event organisers at St Oswald’s Church have chosen to home in on the time of year for donations from householders wishing to dispose of unwanted items in a spring clean of attics and storage areas.

The funds raised will contribute to ongoing and much needed maintenance and repair costs to the grade one listed church which dates back to the 14th century.
The church has already had two successful clothing sales within the last year which featured new, and nearly new day and evening wear plus some vintage and designer outfits but the attic sale will offer a much broader range of goods. Good quality clothes will still be on offer but visitors will enjoy an interesting selection of sale items which will appeal to all ages.
Among the sale donations already received are two antique items for the ceramics stall with connections to the history of Winwick and Warrington. One, a very large, high sided china bowl dating back 100 years and used in the kitchen by four generations of a local farming family, is one of the best examples of Spode pottery from that era and carries the mark “Copeland Garrett Spode”.
A beautifully decorated soup plate, also dating back over a century, belonged to Richard Fairclough, the founder of Warrington’s first large secondary modern school which opened in Latchford in 1933. Richard was a member of the then Warrington Education committee for 26 years and was to realise the dream he had worked for when the school bearing his name opened its doors to its first pupils.

The school is well remembered today by many Warrington residents who were students there and went on to forge successful careers in all walks of life. The school closed its doors in 1983 when it merged with the then Boteler Grammar school to become Warrington Victoria Park County High school. The original building is now office accommodation.
The sale will contain a good selection of value for money goods including china, glassware, vases and pottery, toys, books, jewellery, leather goods – handbags, belts and shoes – art work and furniture, kitchen appliances and much more. Refreshments will be on sale during the event.
