Wolves go top with two wins from two

A LARGE travelling contingent cheered Warrington Wolves to a 26-16 victory in their opening away game of the Super League season at Huddersfield.

The much-fancied hosts were kept largely quiet thanks to a fine defensive effort by Daryl Powell’s side, who followed up their impressive opening win over Leeds last week.

Warrington kept the Giants scoreless in a first half where they opened the scoring inside eight minutes. George Williams’ short kick close to the line held up nicely for Peter Mata’utia to chase and touch down before the dead ball line.

Stefan Ratchford converted that try and a penalty in the 17th minute following a high shot on Daryl Clark proved to be the only further score of the first 40 minutes as the Wolves went in at half time 8-0 to the good.

They made the perfect start to the second half when James Harrison crossed for his second try in as many games and although Joe Greenwood got Huddersfield on the board after 51 minutes, Warrington always had them at arm’s length.

A big break down the wing by Matty Ashton restored the three score advantage and it was game over when Ashton snared an interception try with little more than 10 minutes to play.

Late tries for Will Pryce and Kevin Naiqama added respectability to the scoreline but it was the Wolves’ night.
