A HUGE Platinum Jubilee event was held recently ahead of the Queen’s 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne.

The nation will celebrate with a four-day Bank Holiday from Thursday June 2-5 and a host of events marking the Platinum Jubilee, making her Majesty the longest-serving monarch, ever.

And in celebration of this remarkable achievement, more than 150  Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers from Appleton took part in a series of games and events on Sunday 22nd May at Broomfields Junior School.

An opening ceremony was held at the school playground for the event, as a bagpiper led the different units on a procession around the playground and the field.

Each group of Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, proudly carried spectacular handmade banners, which they had made specially for the event, and featured the name of their individual unit.

They then participated in making Union Jack flags and bunting and in a series of Royal-themed team games – such as Walking the Corgi and Build the Union Jack (a jigsaw game involving an inflatable obstacle course) as well as a quiz all about the Royal family.

The event was organised by Girlguiding Appleton District and saw children from age five upwards participate in the fun games, which were designed to be suitable for all ages.

A picnic tea was enjoyed by the girls after the games had ended with specially made cupcakes celebrating the Jubilee. And the weather remained fine throughout the event.

Event organiser Joint Appleton District Commissioner, Jo Andrews, said: “We were incredibly lucky to have been allowed to use Broomfields Junior School’s field and facilities for this special event to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“There has been a lot of hard work and planning behind the scenes, but it was worth every minute to see how much fun all the girls had during the Jamboree

“Events like this are only possible due to the fantastic team of volunteers that give up so much of their time, my thanks to them as well as the parent helpers who also assisted on the day.

“It was important for the girls to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee in such a fun and memorable way.”
