ASPIRING young film and documentary students at Warrington & Vale Royal College have been proving their skills are out of this world as part of two exciting projects set to be used to promote an up-and-coming café and a college restaurant.
The Level 3 media students have been working with Andrew Kinsella, owner of Warrington’s Café at the End of the Universe, to produce a promotional video for the American-style fast food café – located at Warrington market.
Students have also been working on a separate promotional video for the college’s very own Buckley’s restaurant.
The documentary follows the college’s Welsh Culinary Masters Competition team, who brought home 13 medals, including the silver for the team competition. It is hoped the finished product will help the college secure a place in the final of AA College Restaurant of the Year competition.
Both projects have seen media students work to a live brief, liaising with their clients on everything from the script to how best to capture the restaurants’ unique qualities.
Café at the End of the Universe specialises in burgers and hot dogs but with a twist – with each menu item themed around Andrew’s favourite TV shows, films and retro games.
Former Sir Thomas Boteler pupil Adam Lomax said: “It has been a great experience for us to work with Café at the End of the Universe and produce this promotional video. We’re just in the final stages of editing now. It has been great to be able to work and film with a live client – it’s great work experience for us.”
Students were each given a task, whether it be operating the camera, being responsible for lighting and sound or even starring in the production itself.
Danny Rimmer, lecturer in media at the college, said: “It’s really important that our media students get the opportunity to work with external clients as part of their studies at the college. Not only does this give them the opportunity to enhance what they’re learning in the classroom, it also gives them fantastic work experience that will really stand out on their CV.
“It has been great to see how the students have taken on these projects and created a concept from the briefs – that’s exactly what they’ll need to do in the real world and so it’s important that they have that experience.”
