Anyone who trains regularly, whether that’s an early run along the Mersey or an evening session at the gym, knows the routine. Kit bag packed, water bottle filled, trainers by the door. But what often gets overlooked is what a workout actually does to your skin.

Sweat mixes with whatever’s already sitting on your face, be it sunscreen, makeup or the morning’s moisturiser, and that combination can sit there for an hour or more without you giving it a second thought.

The good news is that sorting this out doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. A handful of small changes before and after exercise can make a noticeable difference to how your skin handles sweat, friction and the general grind of a workout. Toner pads are one of the simplest tools for this, slipping easily into a gym bag without needing water, a sink or any extra steps in your morning.

Why your skin feels the workout too

When you exercise, blood flow to your skin increases and your pores open up slightly as your body works to cool down. If there’s makeup, SPF or product residue sitting on the surface, it can mix with sweat and end up trapped in those open pores.

For a lot of people, this shows up as small breakouts along the hairline, jaw or back, particularly after a few sessions in a row.

The toner pads trick for before and after your workout

This is where toner pads earn their place. Pre-soaked and ready to use, they’re handy for a quick swipe over the face before a session, lifting away any product or oil sitting on the surface so your skin starts the workout relatively clean. Afterwards, the same pads can be used to wipe away sweat and refresh your skin before you head to the shower or get back to your day, which matters if you’re squeezing a workout into a lunch break and don’t have time for a full wash.

A small pack of toner pads takes up barely any space, so there’s no excuse not to have them on hand. Tuck them into a side pocket alongside your deodorant and you’ll always have a quick option ready, whatever the session looks like.

Once you’re back and have showered, that’s the point to think about your wider skincare. Your skin has been through a fair bit, so a gentle cleanse followed by hydration helps it recover properly. If you’ve not given much thought to an everyday skincare routine before, this is a good moment to start, since post-workout skin tends to be more receptive to moisturiser and any treatments you use.

None of this needs to feel like an extra chore bolted onto your training. A couple of swipes before and after a session, plus a proper cleanse once you’re home, adds up over weeks and months. Your skin copes better with the demands of regular exercise, and you’ll likely notice fewer breakouts and less of that tight, sweaty feeling that can linger afterwards. Small steps, repeated often, tend to be what actually makes a difference.
